Interview: ‘Inside Out 2’ Writers Meg LeFauve and Dave Holstein Discuss the Creativity Paired with Responsibility in Crafting Pixar’s Sequel

Pixar gives their creatives lots of freedom, to be sure, but also a ton of responsibility. With Inside Out 2, writers Meg LeFauve and Dave Holstein had quite the monumental task. Building out the world while honoring what came before, all on a larger canvas? That’s a big ask. I previously wrote about my time at Pixar with Inside Out 2 here and here. I also spoke to director Kelsey Mann and producer Mark Neilsen here. Today, it’s LeFauve and Holstein stopping by to chat about the movie.

In my review of Inside Out 2 here, I had the following to say about the flick’s writing:

Director Kelsey Mann understands what we want with this film and gives us more Riley. Working on a screenplay by Dave Holstein and Meg LeFauve (LeFauve and Mann share a Story By credit as well), he has a single-minded goal to entertain, while in the process compelling you to love yourself. He’s acutely successful, too, whether it’s the comedy, the serious moments, or even the adventure of it all. The getting back to HQ aspect is again the flick’s weak link, but it’s a tiny issue. Mann gives voice to some very mature thoughts, though it’s always done in a way that adults and kids can equally latch on to. It’s such impressive work, taking complicated material and making it go down easily.

Below, you can see my conversation with LeFauve and Holstein. I was very curious to hear about how they actually cracked the script, as well as working within the Pixar fold. They’re very easy to chat with and quite open about the process, so there’s plenty of interesting Inside Out 2 tidbits here. The film is on Disney+ now if you somehow haven’t seen it yet. It’s a joy and one of the company’s best sequels, bar none.

MEET ANXIETY — Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” returns to the mind of newly minted teenager Riley just as a new Emotion shows up unexpectedly. And Anxiety, voiced by Maya Hawke, isn’t the type of Emotion who will take a back seat either. Directed by Kelsey Mann and produced by Mark Nielsen, “Inside Out 2” releases only in theaters Summer 2024. © 2023 Disney/Pixar. All Rights Reserved.

Here now is my interview with Inside Out 2 writers Meg LeFauve and Dave Holstein. Enjoy:

Inside Out 2 is available to watch on Disney+ right now!
