Thom Zimny has become in many ways the Bruce Springsteen whisperer. He captures Springsteen in a way that obviously only happens with the man’s trust, but also because he has a take that speaks to fans and newcomers alike. Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band is a perfect example of this, as well as how good he is at it. I previously spoke to Zimny here and here (once about Springsteen already, too). Back at the Toronto International Film Festival, we hooked up again for another discussion about our favorite musician. Today, that conversation comes your way.
In my review of the doc back at TIFF (here), I had this to say about Zimny’s latest work with The Boss:
Thom Zimny and Bruce Springsteen are true collaborators here, with Zimny directing and Springsteen credited as the screenwriter. They’ve worked together on Western Stars and Bruce Springsteen’s Letter to You (my previous rave is here), so they have a shorthand. It allows Zimny access, not just to the band and the man himself, but also to music producer Jon Landau as well. Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band is more evidence that Zimny knows exactly how to capture The Boss. I sincerely hope there’s more to come between them. The music is brilliantly shown, as is the relationship that he’s build with fans.
Below, you can hear my chat with Zimny. Having gone to multiple concerts on this tour, I was fascinated to talk to him about capturing how Springsteen opted to present it. Plus, we get into how he chooses what to focus on or what not to focus on, especially considering how the film does break some news. I obviously love the movie, as I do with all of Zimny’s Springsteen collaborations, and Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band suggests a very bright future ahead for their work together. The documentary is on Hulu this weekend, so starting on October 25th, you need to check this one out…
Here now is my interview with Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band director Thom Zimny. Enjoy:
