‘The Substance’ to Be Submitted as Best Musical/Comedy at the Golden Globes

As FYC season ramps up, The Hollywood Reporter has learned that the Coralie Fargeat-directed body horror film The Substance will be submitted for consideration in the Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical category at the Golden Globes instead of a drama.

According to the THR article, there was much debate on which category the movie would submit for, as it blends many genres. It’s not only a satire on Hollywood prioritizing youth and beauty above everything else but contains some of the most disturbing violence and gore ever shown in a mainstream movie.

The story in and of itself is quite dramatic, and many audience members recall the mirror scene involving Demi Moore‘s Elisabeth Sparkle as an emotional anchor to this. However, putting it in the comedy category could give Moore a better chance at snagging the Best Actress nomination, which may set her on a path to getting an Oscar nomination for her turn in the film.

Of course, the movie itself may be too much of a hard sell for most awards voters, but Moore herself could benefit from positioning The Substance as a comedy rather than a drama, where she would have some fairly stiff competition. Now, one must understand that nothing is set in stone for now, but it’s certainly interesting to see that MUBI may be going all in on their highest-grossing-ever film, which is still drawing in audiences to try The Substance.
