Today, Netflix debuted a teaser trailer for Pablo Larraín‘s Maria. Starring Angelina Jolie as the legendary soprano Maria Callas, the movie has been playing the film festival circuit before a planned release in theaters November 27th and streaming December 11th. At the Telluride Film Festival, our own Joey Magidson raved about Jolie in his review, writing “Angelina Jolie has never been better than she is here. Her heart and soul is in this performance, combing the depths of Callas to bring out the passion for song, the deep sadness, as well as the contemplation of a life coming to a close before its time. She underwent vocal training to be able to do parts of the 1977 arias, which really does mix with actual Callas recordings well. Jolie, quite simply, is splendid and stunning.”
This is the official synopsis from Netflix: “Academy Award®-winner Angelina Jolie is Maria Callas, one of the most iconic performers of the 20th century in acclaimed director Pablo Larrain’s operatic MARIA. The film follows the American-Greek soprano as she retreats to Paris after a glamorous and tumultuous life in the public eye. MARIA reimagines the legendary soprano in her final days as the diva reckons with her identity and life.”
Maria stars Jolie as Callas, with the supporting cast including Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, Valeria Golino, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Haluk Bilginer. Larraín directs a screenplay by Steven Knight, reuniting after Spencer. Ed Lachman provides the cinematography.
