‘Maria’ Acquired By Netflix Ahead of Venice Debut

One of the bigger films without any distribution ahead of the fall film festival season was surely Pablo Larrain‘s Maria. Starring Angelina Jolie as Maria Callas, the movie could easily have her in the Best Actress race, after Larrain’s previous works Jackie and Spencer did the same for Natalie Portman and Kristen Stewart, respectively. Well, with it about to premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, a distributor has stepped up.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has picked up Maria, reuniting Larrain with the streamer after El Conde last year. This gives them another potential Oscar vehicle, to be sure, with Jolie likely a major contender in Best Actress. As it debuts tomorrow at Venice, followed by presumably more festival bows, we’ll know more. For now, it appears to be a player with a good home, at last.
