LOS ANGELES – July 12, 2024 – The Television Critics Association announced the winners of
the organization’s landmark 40th Annual TCA Awards, honoring outstanding programming from the 2023- 2024 television season. The winners were selected by the TCA’s membership of more than 230
professional television journalists from across the United States and Canada.
FX’s dynamic first-year period piece Shōgun ruled the night with a year-best four wins, claiming the
organization’s top prize: Program of the Year Award. The series’ other victories include Outstanding
Achievement in Drama and Outstanding New Program; as well as Individual Achievement in Drama for star Anna Sawai, fueled by her stunning portrayal of Toda Mariko, whose fierce loyalty and intelligence play a vital role as the season unfolds.
Other notable winners include HBO | Max’s Hacks, which swept both comedy categories with wins for
the incomparable Jean Smart—who took home her second Individual Achievement in Comedy Award for her celebrated turn as seasoned comedian Deborah Vance—as well as Outstanding Achievement in
Comedy; while Netflix’s buzzworthy Baby Reindeer nabbed Outstanding Achievement In Movies, Miniseries or Specials, and the platform’s star-studded sitdown John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s
In LA, walked away with Outstanding Achievement in Variety, Talk, or Sketch. Elsewhere, the Disney+ offerings Doctor Who and Bluey won big, as the sci-fi spectacular hopped into the TARDIS with Outstanding Achievement in Family Programming, while the animated canine hit fetched its second- consecutive Outstanding Achievement in Children’s Programming.
Additionally, ID’s acclaimed and uncompromising docuseries Quiet On Set: The Dark Side Of Kids TV earned Outstanding Achievement in News and Information, and Peacock’s killer competition series The Traitors slayed in Outstanding Achievement in Reality Programming.
The TCA was also proud to recognize David Lynch and Mark Frost’s masterful mystery series Twin
Peaks with the Heritage Award in recognition of its enduring significance and impact. The cult hit
originally debuted on ABC in 1990 and starred Kyle MacLachlan as noted coffee connoisseur and FBI
Special Agent Dale Cooper, whose investigation into the murder of homecoming queen Laura Palmer
takes a turn for the surreal as he uncovers a web of secrets, lies, and otherworldly evil that has engulfed
the town.
The groundbreaking series still continues to draw viewers in search of answers to the iconic
question: Who Killed Laura Palmer? The EMMY®-winning series ran for two seasons and boasted a
talented supporting cast featuring Ray Wise, Lara Flynn Boyle, Sherilyn Fenn, Piper Laurie, Sheryl
Lee, and Russ Tamblyn, with appearances by Lynch, Heather Graham, Billy Zane, Michael Parks,
David Duchovny, Miguel Ferrer, and Alicia Witt, among others. Twin Peaks’ influence extends
throughout popular culture, building an immersive world that includes the hit film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, a well-received third season released on Showtime in 2017, and several books, featurettes, and a VR game.
The TCA was proud to name beloved actor Andre Braugher as this year’s Career Achievement recipient in honor of his incredible life and legacy that captivated audiences around the world. Known for his signature smile and rich voice, which provided the narration for countless specials, documentaries, and even the Olympic Games, Braugher occupied rare air as a master of both comedy and drama. He brought grit, depth, and a subtle sense of humor to some of the small screen’s finest lawmen, starting in 1989 with his first television role as Detective Winston Blake on Kojak.
Four years later, Braugher would step into the shoes of hardened Detective Frank Pembleton on the celebrated police procedural Homicide: Life On The Street—a role that would come to define his career and showcase his immense repertoire, earning the actor his first EMMY® for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, and consecutive TCA Awards for Individual Achievement in Drama. In one of his last major roles, Braugher would get to display his comedic talent full-time as the dry-witted Captain Raymond Holt across eight seasons of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, accruing four more EMMY® nominations in the process. His other notable television credits include the crime caper miniseries Thief, for which he received his second EMMY®; as well as BoJack Horseman, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Men of a Certain Age, House, and The Good Fight, among many others.
