Once you see Robot Dreams, you’ll know that the filmmaker behind it has an enormous heart. So, it’s no surprise that writer/director Pablo Berger is a very kind soul. The film is a gift to cinephiles, no matter your feelings on animation. However, utilizing the format allows the movie to touch you in a whole other manner. The Oscar nomination in Best Animated Feature was just icing on the cake for a job well done. So, it was a no-brainer to want to talk to Berger. Recently, we hopped on Zoom to discuss the flick. Today, that video comes your way.
In my rave review of the film (here), I had this to say about Berger’s work:
Filmmaker Pablo Berger executes his vision with aplomb. The beginning is about as adorable and fun as anything you’ll see this year, while his ending ranks up there with La La Land (in more ways than one). Berger knows exactly how to make Robot Dreams never boring, always beautiful, and constantly compelling. It’s a home run.
Below, you can see my conversation with Berger. I wanted to hear about what the work means to him, as well as what it’s like to be at the end of this long road. Robot Dreams is an animated miracle of a movie, so as you’d imagine, he hasn’t fully processed it yet. This is a lovely chat for a lovely film. Don’t you dare miss it, now that the Academy Award nominee is finally in theaters…
Here now is my interview with Robot Dreams filmmaker Pablo Berger. Enjoy:
Robot Dreams is in theaters now!

One of the best films I have ever seen. It’s one of my favorites now.
