David Oyelowo has fought like hell to make Lawmen: Bass Reeves. In many ways, it’s a miracle that the show came to fruition in the first place. At the same time, and as he discusses with me, it’s so obviously a story people want to see told, the fact that it was such a task is mind-boggling. Oyelowo executive produces here with Taylor Sheridan, telling untold story of the first Black U.S. Marshal, Bass Reeves, the role he plays. Previously, he spoke with me here about The After. Today, it’s time to chat about Lawmen: Bass Reeves.
Below, you can hear my conversation with Oyelowo. We talk a lot about what it took to get the show on the air, as well as what he looks for in a role. He and I also continue to joke about the time I told him that he was going to win an Oscar. I do still think an Academy Award is in his future, but the amusement we still get out of that story does blunt the sting of the Selma snub, somewhat. He’s a good man, a great actor, and very fun to talk to. Fair warning, the audio is a bit choppy on his end, but there’s still quality material to be found.
