‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ in the Works at Warner Bros. with Andy Serkis Directing

Whether you want it or not, David Zaslav seems adamant about doing more Lord of the Rings pictures, even if the franchise is going strong with The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Prime Video. The franchise is getting an interesting installment this year with the anime The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, but it seems there will be more with The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum in the works at Warner Bros.

Andy Serkis will reprise his role as the iconic character, alongside helming the picture, with Peter Jackson executive producing. Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou are currently writing the screenplay, which is in early development and is set for a 2026 release.

According to Zaslav, the film is set to launch a new series of Lord of the Rings titles, which “will explore storylines yet to be told.” All of this is fine, especially because there is so much material that J.R.R. Tolkien wrote beyond The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion.

However, a Gollum spinoff doesn’t seem like the best bet to start new Lord of the Rings movies, especially considering the fact that the Prime Video series is doing way more to expand the world of Tolkien than this movie may do. Who knows, we may be proven wrong. After all, Serkis longs to direct more movies, so perhaps this will be something to see, but skepticism will remain until the finished product is out.
