Box Office Report for the Week of April 14

It may be a civil war on social media over Alex Garland‘s latest movie, but Civil War has translated to pretty decent ticket sales, making it the highest-grossing opening weekend for A24. Perhaps a $25 million opening weekend may sound tame for people, but with a $50 million budget and a prestige studio that isn’t known for particularly strong opening weekends, the film should be considered a success.

With A24 expanding into the ‘blockbuster’ game, as evidently shown in their desire to screen some of their older films on IMAX (with Civil War getting a massive PLF/IMAX release for April), Civil War‘s results prove good news for the studio who look to balance out their more ‘elevated’ fare with slightly bigger productions.

Beyond that, however, it was a rather quiet movie weekend. SUGA – Agust D TOUR ‘D-DAY’ THE MOVIE made quite a splash for BTS fans, as the film received a two-day IMAX release and grossed more than $990.000 in 787 venues, which is a $1,200 per screen average! On social media, I warned that the movie would make a lot of money, and it’s even better than I anticipated, especially with its limited release. Perhaps if the film shared screens with Civil War, it would’ve been more successful, but it’s still another major hit from IMAX, who have expressed their desire to go beyond blockbusters.

A re-release of Shrek 2 made over $1.3 million in 1,152 screens, while the independent sports film The Long Game has a per-screen average of $1,350 in over 1,030 screens, resulting in a $1.3 million tally for its opening weekend. Meanwhile, The First Omen is struggling to gain legs, with a 54% drop and a $3.7 million, whilst Monkey Man is faring slightly better with a $4.1 million tally, despite a 59% drop from its first weekend.

It’ll be an even quieter weekend at the movies next week, with only Abigail the major release of that weekend. Perhaps Spy x Family‘s success in Japan will aid the film to cross over as it gets released in select IMAX theatres next week, which could prove far bigger than people anticipate. Time will tell if Civil War gains legs, or if its divisive CinemaScore will reflect upon its commercial reception.

Here is the full list of the top ten films of the weekend:
