The latest film from Marielle Heller, Nightbitch, will be released in theatres this December. Originally conceived as a straight-to-Hulu release, the film will make its way to cinemas on December 6. Written and directed by Heller and based on the book of the same name by Rachel Yoder, the film will star Amy Adams, Scoot McNairy, Ella Thomas, Garrett C. Phillips, Mary Holland, and Zoe Chao.
From the press release, here is the plot synopsis:
“A woman pauses her career to be a stay-at-home mom, but soon her new domesticity takes a surreal turn.”
With the film going from Hulu to cinemas, one may think Searchlight Pictures is mounting a massive awards campaign for the movie and Amy Adams’ performance. The actress has been nominated for six Academy Awards but has yet to win one.
Perhaps this will be it, as Marielle Heller’s last two movies, Can You Ever Forgive Me? and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood garnered nominations for Melissa McCarthy and Tom Hanks‘ respective performances as Lee Israel and Fred Rogers. It’s too early to tell the impact Nightbitch will have amongst critics and awards voters, but it’s certainly one to look out for as more prestige films begin to set dates for later this year.
