It’s Super Bowl Sunday, so audiences will predictably skip cinemas and stay home. However, the Super Bowl box office has been its lowest in decades, outside of the COVID-19 pandemic, with a combined $40 million tally from its major motion pictures, the worst in 30 years!
Thankfully, Denis Villeneuve returns next month for Dune: Part Two, which will probably spice up box office ticket sales, but don’t be surprised if the next two weeks are as bad as this, with Madame Web being the only major title before it. And if you think that will spruce up box office sales, well…don’t get your hopes up.
The only new major release this weekend was Lisa Frankenstein, which did well considering its low budget, with a $3.8 million tally. Argylle remained on top of the box office, but dropped at 62% with a meager $6.5 million tally. It definitely won’t make its money back, as the negative reviews likely soured its word of mouth.
Next week should be a little better for the box office, with Madame Web and Bob Marley: One Love being two major Hollywood titles, but the landscape hasn’t been as strong. Of course, there is always a slowdown in the early months of the year, but it’s never been as slow as now due to the lingering effects of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. And if you think the strikes are in the rearview mirror, IATSE and The Animation Guild will renew their contracts later this year. With the treatment of animation workers an even more pressing topic in the wake of Moana 2‘s announcement from television series to movie, there will definitely be some movement that could, once again, upend the industry.
