After the massive success of 2022’s Prey, which was recently nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie (raved about by Joey here), director Dan Trachtenberg (who me we spoke to here) plans to spearhead a host of new Predator-related projects for Disney.
One of those will be the upcoming movie Badlands, directed by Trachtenberg and written by Patrick Aison. The project has been kept under wraps for some time, with a production start date aiming for the month of June.
Not much is known about the spinoff, but it will not be a direct sequel to Prey, which was set in 1719. It will instead be set sometime in the future but will star a female lead, just like Amber Midthunder led Prey.
Whether this will be a straight-to-streaming affair or a theatrical exclusive also isn’t clear, but one should expect the movie to bow out on the big screen first. Signs have been pointing in that direction ever since Bob Iger returned as CEO of The Walt Disney Company and restructured its streaming business. As a result, Alien: Romulus, set to debut on Hulu, will now be released in cinemas. One should expect the same for Badlands and future Predator installments.
