Sony has landed the distribution rights to Danny Boyle‘s 28 Years Later. After a massive bidding war, the studio ultimately got the rights to the highly-anticipated sequel to 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later.
Boyle is returning in the director’s chair, with Alex Garland set to write the screenplay. The two collaborated on the original 28 Days Later, whilst 28 Weeks Later was directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo.
Moreover, a sequel to 28 Years Later has already been confirmed, with Garland also set to return as screenwriter. Boyle will only direct the first installment; a director for the sequel will be determined later.
Cillian Murphy, who portrayed Jim in the original movie, will return as executive producer and could potentially star in it. However, it is unclear if the latter will be true, as details on the matter are kept under wraps.
Each installment will cost $60 million, with Boyle, Garland, Andrew Macdonald and Peter Rice producing. No release date has currently been announced, but it’s certainly an exciting development for a project that has been touted in development as 28 Months Later, only for it to be entirely different than the rumors made it out to be.
