‘Barbie’ Has Been Deemed an Adapted Screenplay by the Academy

One of the more interesting early Oscar stories to follow has been where the script for Barbie will compete. Will it be in Best Adapted Screenplay or Best Original Screenplay? Well, despite the Writers Guild of America deeming to to be an Original Screenplay contender, the writers within the Academy have decided differently.

According to Variety, Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach‘s script for Barbie will contend in Best Adapted Screenplay. The original distinction by the WGA is not one shared by Academy members, it seems. So, Oscar voters will now have the film duking it out with work like American Fiction, Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, and Poor Things in Adapted, not the likes of Air, The Holdovers, and Past Lives in Original. Stay tuned to see if this works to the movie’s benefit or detriment.
