Awards Radar Community: What Films Are You Thankful For This Year?

Thursday was Thanksgiving, as you all know. As part of the holiday, people like to give thanks and share with others what they’re expressing thankfulness over. So, for this weekend’s Awards Radar Community Question, it seemed appropriate to go down that avenue. That makes for a simple question to put forth to you all…what films are you thankful for this year?

Perhaps you’re thankful for the sensation that was Barbenheimer? If Barbie and Oppenheimer being the phenomenon that it was really did it for you this year, that would undoubtedly be something to express thanks over. The film industry is certainly giving thanks there, considering the box off haul that the pair of flicks took in this summer…and continues to do today, still.

Maybe you’re literally thankful for the Thanksgiving film finally being made and coming out? That’s certainly an option, with Eli Roth definitely appreciating. On the flip side, perhaps it’s a movie with some personal meaning to you. I saw Zach Braff sharing reactions from viewers who watched A Good Person this year and found a lot there in terms of struggles with addiction. So, there’s all sorts of options here…

One movie that I am particularly thankful for this year is Asteroid City.

For Wes Anderson to put out something like that in the midst of internet pudknockers using A.I. algorithms to recreate surface-level, dime-store imitations of his aesthetic to somehow claim that “LOL even computers can make Wes Anderson movies!” pushes that arrogant, ignorant contention into the dirt.

A.I. can’t replicate Anderson’s preoccupations, anxieties, and fascination with the inscrutable. It can’t comprehend how behind-the-scenes dramas that play out during a stage production connect to the drama of the play they’re putting on.

A huge motivating factor of the strikes that occurred this year centered around A.I. Anderson proved how no machine, no matter how “smart,” can truly replace human artists.
