Garth Davis introduced himself to audiences with Lion, a film that nearly got him a Best Director nomination at the Oscars. The movie got a ton of Academy Award love, putting a lot of eyes on his follow-up. That led to the much delayed Mary Magdalene, and now Foe. So, he’s a director who really takes his time. Recently, I sat down on Zoom to talk about the work with him, and in particular, his latest flick. Today, that conversation comes your way.
In my review of Foe out of the New York Film Festival (here), I had this bit to say about Davis’ filmmaking:
Filmmaker Garth Davis is lucky to have this cast, so it’s good to see him give them lots to work with. The direction is largely focused on observing his main couple, with some little sci-fi elements thrown in around the margins.
Below, you can see my chat with Davis. We talk a bit about all of his films, but Foe is the focus. In particular, how he’s able to utilize strong casts, which is a through line throughout all of his works. It’s a nice conversation for an interesting movie, so you should definitely give it a watch. Foe is in theaters now, too, so don’t miss it!
Here now is my interview with Foe filmmaker Garth Davis. Enjoy:
