Interview: Sian Clifford on Rob Lowe, ‘Unstable,’ and Collaborating with Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Sian Clifford earned an Emmy nomination for playing Claire, the sister of the title character, in season two of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s celebrated comedy series Fleabag. Now, the actress is back on American television playing Chief Financial Officer Anna Bennet opposite Rob Lowe’s Ellis Dragon in Netflix’s Unstable.

Awards Radar had the chance to speak with Clifford about how she came to work with someone she had long admired:

“I woke up to this glorious e-mail saying, would I like to get on a Zoom with Rob Lowe and have a chat about this project, with Victor Fresco, the show’s creator, as well. I found myself, a couple of days later, on a Saturday afternoon in Bulgaria, having a conversation with them. I read with Rob and with Johnny about a week later for Netflix, just to make sure the rapport we were building up on a Zoom also translated into the script and with our characters. And then Netflix said they’d let me do it! That’s how that happened. I’m like the biggest Parks and Rec fan on the planet. And so it was genuinely a real, arresting moment in my life.”

She also discussed how much she’s like her character:

“There’s a lot of Anna that I relate to, definitely her fastidiousness and her efficiency and impatience with people not getting on with their job. I definitely relate to that. Her organization. They’re the things…I’m not sure if I’m more or less unstable than Anna. There’s something of that in all of our characters that I love. Ellis is at the heart of the story, but he’s not the only unstable character. We all are in our own way. We’re all dealing with our own things spiraling out of control. I think there’s a bit of a loose cannon in Anna that I don’t think I have. Who knows? Maybe that’s not for me to say.”

Season one of Unstable is streaming on Netflix.
