The first trailer for Blitz Bazawule‘s highly-anticipated retelling of Alice Walker‘s The Color Purple has been released online. With a screenplay by Marcus Gardley, the film is not only an adaptation of Walker’s book but of the Broadway stage musical. It is not a remake of Steven Spielberg‘s 1985 movie. However, Spielberg and Quincy Jones have returned to produce the latest adaptation alongside Oprah Winfrey, who starred in Spielberg’s movie and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
The new adaptation will star Fantasia, Colman Domingo, Taraji P. Henson, Corey Hawkins, Danielle Brooks, H.E.R, Ciara, Halle Bailey, Louis Gossett Jr, David Alan Grier, Aunjanue Ellis, Tamela J. Mann, Elizabeth Marvel, and Jon Batiste.
Its plot synopsis reads, “Warner Bros. Pictures invites you to experience the extraordinary sisterhood of three women who share one unbreakable bond in “The Color Purple.” This bold new take on the beloved classic is directed by Blitz Bazawule (“Black Is King,” “The Burial of Kojo”) and produced by Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders, and Quincy Jones.”
You can watch the full trailer below and see the movie exclusively in theatres on December 25:
