Box Office Report for the Week of May 21

The family film par excellence is back for the tenth entry in Fast X. It has one of the lowest-grossing domestic openings of the franchise so far, with a rather lousy $67.5 million, compared to Furious 7‘s record-holding $147.1 million opening. It made even worse than F9, which opened at $70 million during a time when 80% of the theatres were opened at half-capacity.

However, the movie grossed over $251.4 million internationally, for $318.9 million. It is a major hit overseas, which could be why a third part of the concluding chapters of Dom Toretto’s saga was announced instead of two, even if diminishing returns in North America have made the franchise stale.

Two independent films released on limited screens this weekend, with Paul Schrader‘s Master Gardener making a decent $269.200 in 220 theatres. The movie received mixed reviews from its initial festival run, and they haven’t improved since its release. However, the middling word-of-mouth could benefit its run when it releases in more theatres next weekend.

Time will tell how much Sanctuary makes when it expands on May 26, but it has made $65.000 in only five theatres. That’s quite good, although you can’t judge its performance based on only five cinemas. We’ll see how it performs when it expands, as with Master Gardener.

Regarding previously-released films, Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3 is holding up well in its third weekend with a 48% drop and a $31.9 million tally. The movie has now crossed the $600 million mark this week, and an $800 million total cume is absolutely possible. The next movie to watch will be Disney’s The Little Mermaid remake, which is tracking to be one of the highest-grossing Disney remakes of all time, and could reach that coveted $1 billion. However, June and July will be amazingly stacked with blockbusters, each competing for success. There’s a bit of a lull right now, with only three blockbusters in May, but June and July 2023 will be the biggest summer season since 2019.

Here’s the full list of the top ten films of the week:

  1. Fast X (Universal): $67.5M – 4,046 theatres
