In the popular Apple TV+ series Shrinking, which was recently renewed for a second season, Michael Urie portrays Brian, the upbeat (sometimes insensitively so) lawyer and best friend of Jimmy (Jason Segel, interviewed here by Joey). The death of Jimmy’s wife has created some distance between them, leading to an entertaining and heartfelt reconciliation over the course of the show’s first season.
Awards Radar had the chance to speak to Urie about his own fortunes and the chance to work alongside a phenomenal cast:
“I’ve had a lucky life, I will say that. I’ve worked hard. I’ve certainly faced my fair share of rejections and disappointments and stuff. I’m in show business, after all! But no, I’ve been pretty lucky. I’ve had some great friends and great relationships, and I have a great family. I’ve gotten to do some really cool things in my career. Shrinking is definitely at the top of that list. If you look at my life right now, yeah, everything kind of goes my way.”
Of the show’s tender balance between humor and heart, he expressed:
“This is really funny, and this is real. When my friend’s mom died, he was really sad. And I was really sad. And then we started making jokes, and it made us feel a little bit better. It made me feel better. She would have wanted that. I think that, even though obviously it’s so sad that Tia has died, and it’s still killing everybody emotionally that she’s gone, she wouldn’t have wanted us to go on without laughter. Even the late Tia wants us to go and be happy. That’s life. That’s humanity, and the writers really play into that.”
