Interview: Aubrey Plaza on ‘The White Lotus,’ ‘Emily the Criminal,’ and Playing Different Roles

HBO’s The White Lotus boasts an entirely new cast for its second, Italy-set season, with two notable exceptions. Among the best additions is Aubrey Plaza, who picked up a Golden Globe nomination earlier this week for playing Harper, whose marriage to Ethan (Will Sharpe) undergoes significant challenges while on vacation.

Awards Radar had the chance to speak to Plaza again (after Joey’s prior conversations with her here and here) about joining the show, an opportunity she jumped at for one simple reason:

“To work with Mike White. I’m such a huge fan of his, and I was forever. I’ve just been scheming and doing spells and trying to work with him for years. He’s brilliant. It was everything I ever hoped for.”

Speaking about past TV parts on Parks and Recreation and Legion and her starring role in this year’s Emily the Criminal:

“I hope that people would forget Harper when they watch Emily the Criminal. It’s such a different character. Everything about it. It’s really different…I don’t want to do the same thing over and over again. And that’s the thing about Hollywood, you do one thing good and then everybody just wants you to do that over and over again. That’s not interesting to me. But more importantly than that, I just want to make really great art. I want to make movies and shows that people remember and don’t just kind of disappear into the ether.”

The White Lotus is streaming on HBO Max and Emily the Criminal is streaming on Netflix.
