The American Cinema Editors (ACE) announced that film director Gina Prince-Bythewood would receive the ACE Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award, which recognizes “an artist who exemplifies distinguished achievement in the art and business of film.” This year, Prince-Bythewood directed The Woman King, which was met with massive critical and commercial acclaim.
In a statement, ACE president Kevin Tent lauded Prince-Bythewood’s talents, stating that she is a “supremely versatile trailblazer from day one of her career,” and that she has “entertained us with intimate films and global blockbusters that explore the human experience through formidable female characters. A champion of diverse, character-driven narratives, her latest film — The Woman King — is the crown jewel of a career spent pushing boundaries and telling stories that touch our hearts and minds. She is a proud supporter of the editing community and we’re so thrilled to honor her with the Golden Eddie.”
The ceremony will also honor editors Don Zimmerman and Lynne Willingham with two career achievement honors. Tent also expressed his excitement for these awards, stating that Zimmerman and Willingham are “two extraordinary editors” responsible for “editing some of the most entertaining, moving and thrilling movies and television shows of our time. They are so deserving of their career achievement honors and we look forward to celebrating them at this year’s ACE Eddie Awards.”
The ACE Eddie Awards will be taking place on March 5, 2023, with nominations to be announced on February 1, 2023.
