NBC to Air the Golden Globes in 2023

In a rather shocking bout of breaking news, NBC will be broadcasting the 80th Annual Golden Globe Awards, which will take place in January 2023. This news comes after the network decided not to air the 79th edition of the awards (which occurred anyways, but without any live broadcast), after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association came under fire for a slew of unethical financial practices and controversies surrounding its non-diverse membership.

NBC did not comment on the news, but The Hollywood Reporter has said that the network is aiming for the ceremony to be broadcasted on January 10th. The Golden Globes have always occurred on a Sunday, but multiple conflicts involving New Year’s Day, NBC Sunday Night Football, and the Critics Choice Awards have led NBC to make the decision to broadcast the 80th Golden Globes on a Tuesday.

While the Golden Globes returning to NBC may be positive news for the HFPA, one still wonders if anyone will be watching the ceremony after it has been heavily dismissed by not only celebrities and critics but broadcast audiences as a whole. Even without controversies surrounding the association, ratings weren’t as high as they were in the past. But now that the HFPA has gone through so many scandals, it’s unclear how its future will play out amongst the masses, and on NBC when they broadcast the 80th ceremony next year.
