WarnerMedia Optimistic About Sequel to Dune & More Sopranos and Matrix Movies In The Works

WarnerMedia toppers Jason Kilar and Ann Sarnoff revealed in a Deadline interview some plans for their future slate.

During this interview, they revealed that their 2021 film slate, which was released on HBO Max and theatres on the same day, will not have their box office stun any of the films sequel potential. They specifically stated that they support sequels for Dune, The Matrix Resurrections, and The Many Saints Of Newark.

Despite the film’s weak $4.6M opening, Sarnoff said that they were “thrilled with the results of Many Saints” and “you see Sopranos pop into the top 10 of the most viewed series on the service. It’s given it an entirely new life.” Sopranos series creator and co-writer of The Many Saints Of Newark David Chase has expressed interest in more prequels to The Sopranos.

As for more Matrix movies, Sarnoff made it pretty clear of that franchises future when she told Deadline, “Anytime Lana (Wachowski) wants to make a movie, we’re all in.”

Now, for Dune fans, many are probably very nervous for the films performance this weekend to see if it will result in the trilogy that writer and director Denis Villeneuve has expressed interest in doing. Well, according to Sarnoff, Villeneuve has WarnerMedia’s full support for a Dune 2. “Will we have a sequel to Dune?” Sarnoff asks, “If you watch the movie you see how it ends. I think you pretty much know the answer to that.”
