Somewhat unceremoniously in yesterday’s Nintendo Direct, video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto announced the release date and voice cast for a new Mario movie. This film is produced by Universal’s animated branch Illumination and is set for release in North America on December 21, 2022.
The film features a star studded Hollywood cast including the likes of Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Charlie Day as Mario, Peach and Luigi respectively. It also features a supporting cast starring Keegan-Michael Key, Jack Black, Fred Armisen, Kevin Michael Richardson and Seth Rogen. Original Mario voice actor, Charles Martinet, is to make cameos within the film.
Though the casting has received ridicule from fans online, most notably Chris Pratt as Mario and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, the announcement also seems to be garnering curiosity.
No trailer is in sight yet for the project, but work is well underway.
