Denis Villeneuve Talks ‘Dune’ Sequel and Teases a Third Film!

If you think Dune Part Two might not get made, don’t jinx it! In an interview with Louis-Philippe Ouimet for Le Téléjournal Avec Patrice Roy, Dune filmmaker Denis Villeneuve revealed that not only a second film is currently in the works, but he would also like to adapt Frank Herbert‘s Dune Messiah (if Warner Bros. wants to, of course):

“There is Dune’s second book, ‘The Messiah of Dune,’ which could make an extraordinary film. I always saw that there could be a trilogy; after that, we’ll see. It’s years of work; I can’t think of going further than that.” [Translated from French]

Dune is currently set to premiere at the Venice International Film Festival and will have IMAX screenings both in Toronto and Montreal as a part of the 2021 edition of the Toronto International Film Festival. If the film is going to be a success at the box-office (or on HBO Max), Dune Part Two, and its spinoff series, Dune: The Sisterhood, will likely get made. But what if a third one gets greenlit too? If it’s on the back of Villeneuve’s head, it may just happen, one way or another. It’s interesting to see what the filmmaker’s next projects will be (he is aiming for Part Two and a Cleopatra adaptation), and to see him grow from directing mid-sized independent cinema to large scale blockbusters should make everyone who is an aspiring filmmaker believe it’s possible to break into the industry if they have good stories to tell.
