‘Annette’ First Reactions Come Out of Cannes Film Festival

Director Leos Carax (Holy Motors) has been working on his newest feature Annette for quite some time now – all films take a while to make – but attendees of the 2021 Cannes Film Festival have recently watched the film in its entirety and the reactions from those individuals have surfaced online.

So, is it any good? Well, it certainly seems as though the vast majority of the reactions have been quite positive. Of course, there are some people that have some mixed feelings on the project.

“I thought Adam Driver doing Bo Burnham-style stand-up and having a horrifying robot baby with Marion Cotillard was weird but ‘Annette’ just kept outdoing itself,” critic Iana Murray wrote of the film. “A true s—post of a movie. Don’t know if iI like it yet but I respect the audacity.”

Alex Billington said “A go-for-broke all out epic rock opera that’s about, well, abusive men and exploitation in the music industry. Endlessly witty, crazy creative, totally ridiculous with a puppet baby and so much more. Adam Driver is extraordinary, as always, in musical form.”

Here are some additional reactions below:

david ehrlich on Twitter: “ANNETTE: Leos Carax made a Sparks musical about how self-loathing men can’t accept love and Adam Driver sings into Marion Cotillard’s vagina (twice!) and then she gives birth to a marionette baby and I was just deeply bored by every dour, self-amused, batshit second of it. / Twitter”

Thomas Storaï on Twitter: “#Annette is the weirdest experience I had in cinemas. It’s a never-ending and convoluted acid trip. Its only redeeming quality is #AdamDriver who delivers an exceptional performance. pic.twitter.com/UHxF73cftp / Twitter”

Christer Emanuelsson @ Cannes Film Festival. on Twitter: “#Annette was bonkers and darker than expected. I’ve never been a fan of Adam Driver, but here he’s really good. Champetier’s cinematography, brilliant as always. A few songs verged too much on storytelling and dragged a bit, but that’s a marginal complaint #Cannes2021 / Twitter”

Marido on Twitter: “Don’t know what to think about #Annette ?!!!?? It’s a lot to process 🤯🤯🤯 / Twitter”
