Awards Radar Podcast #41: Joey, Myles, and Steve Put a Bow on the First Half of 2021

Welcome back to the Awards Radar Podcast. In each episode, Editor Joey Magidson (that’s me!) will be joined by some of the staff of Awards Radar to talk about the latest in film, television, and entertainment in general. The show will obviously have an awards season slant to it, but we won’t forget about other movies and shows, that’s for sure!

For episode forty one, I was once again joined by regulars Myles Hughes and Steve Prusakowski. This time around, we wrapped up the first half of the year, in advance of my awards post, coming tomorrow. We also talk some Black Widow, touch on where Loki stands, and do another Mount Rushmore, as well as a Filmaholic Face-Off. Throw in some Zola talk and more, plus our usual silliness, and it’s a good time…

As is always the case for us here, I do hope you all enjoy the latest episode of the Awards Radar Podcast, our forty first one to date. Of course, feel free to revisit the previous installments by clicking the Podcast tab (here) on the top of the page. Plus, listen to us on Apple Podcasts (iTunes), Spotify, and other platforms. More to come each and every single week, so from the bottom of my heart, thank you for listening!

I thought with the Cannes Film Festival kicking off next week, it would be fun to test the panel’s knowledge on previous Palme D’Or winners. There are 10 movies listed, all of them Best Picture nominees from their given years that also played in competition at Cannes, and I’d like the panel to guess whether or not they won the Palme D’Or.

(Maybe Joey asks one by one, revealing the answer after the panellists have guessed whether or not it won?)

Did it win the Palme D’Or?:

-Marty, the Best Picture winner of 1955
-Room at the Top, Best Picture nominee and winner of Actress and Adapted Screenplay in 1959
-Doctor Zhivago, Best Picture nominee and winner of 5 Oscars in 1965
-M*A*S*H, Best Picture nominee and Adapted Screenplay winner of 1970
-Taxi Driver, Best Picture nominee of 1976
-Chariots of Fire, Best Picture winner of 1981
-The Mission, Best Picture nominee and Cinematography winner of 1986
-The Pianist, Best Picture nominee and winner of Actor, Adapted Screenplay and director in 2002
-Babel, Best Picture nominee and winner of Best Score in 2006
-No Country For Old Men, Best Picture winner of 2007

Answers:

-Marty won the Palme D’Or, over films such as Bad Day at Black Rock, The Crucified Lovers, and Rififi
-Room at the Top lost the Palme D’Or to Black Orpheus
-Doctor Zhivago lost the Palme D’Or to A Man and a Woman, and The Birds the Bees and the Italians, which tied for the award
-M*A*S*H won the Palme D’Or, over films such as Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion, Fruit of Paradise, and Leo the Last (weak year)
-Taxi Driver won the Palme D’Or, over films such as Kings of the Road, Cria Cuervos, and The Tenant
-Chariots of Fire lost the Palme D’Or to Man of Iron
-The Mission won the Palme D’Or, over films such as After Hours, Down by Law, Mona Lisa, and The Sacrifice
-The Pianist won the Palme D’or over films such as About Schmidt, Punch-Drunk Love, Russian Ark, The Man Without a Past, and Unknown Pleasures.
-Babel lost the Palme D’Or to The Wind That Shakes the Barley
-No Country For Old Men lost the Palme D’Or to 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days
