A lot of films rely on the chemistry between their actors, but few do to the extent of Plan B. The new comedy streaming exclusively on Hulu tells the story of Sunny (Kuhoo Verma) and Lupe (Victoria Moroles), two teenagers who are forced on a quest to obtain birth control the night after a sexual mishap leads to a pregnancy scare. In order for the film to work, casting these two leads was crucial, and thankfully for Plan B they absolutely nailed it.
From the moment we meet Sunny and Lupe it feels as if these two have been best friends for years, with the rhythm and comfortability that seems virtually impossible to be able to manufacture. Verma and Moroles’ performances are the lynchpin that could have made or destroyed the film, and they make for a journey you want to go on with two characters you become deeply invested in.
Directed by Natalie Morales from a script by Prathi Srinivasan and Joshua Levy, the film takes the antiquated teen sex comedy genre and updates it for our modern era with a fresh new perspective that subverts familiar tropes through the experience of these two young women of color. It’s a genuinely touching, and uproariously funny ride that makes you want to watch it again and again (our review here).
Putting a new spin on a conventional routine is nothing new for the producers behind the film (Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, Josh Heald, and Dina Hillier), who have been responsible for projects like Cobra Kai and Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle. As is the case with that latter film, the chemistry between the two leads is vital, and they knew they struck gold again with Verma and Moroles. As Hurwitz and Schlossberg put it, “Over 15 years after making Harold & Kumar, it feels like we’re having déjà vu. Kuhoo and Victoria are such a talented and dynamic duo. We can’t wait for audiences to join them on this hilarious and heartfelt ride.”
Audiences will now get that chance to take the ride with these two leading actors and their breakout performances as the film streams on Hulu. I got the chance to sit down with the two of them and discuss their roles and the instant chemistry they felt upon meeting each other.
