‘Dear Evan Hansen’ Sends Regards Via a Trailer Drop

It’s the year of musicals on the big screen in 2021! With In the Heights and West Side Story dominating conversations, you may have forgotten that another major adaptation is coming out soon. Well, Universal is here to remind you, as they just dropped the trailer for Dear Evan Hansen, which will be releasing in theaters on September 24th.

The Original Broadway production of the musical created by Ben Platt and Justin Paul slaughtered the Tonys in 2017, winning awards for Best Musical, Best Leading Actor in a Musical (Platt), and 4 more prizes.

Stephen Chbosky (The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Wonder) directs the adaptation from a script by Steven Levenson, who wrote the book the musical was based on. Alongside Platt, the film stars Kaitlyn Dever, Amandla Stenberg, Amy Adams, and Julianne Moore (in a role that won Rachel Bay Jones a Tony).

The story follows the titular Evan Hansen, a high school student who writes letters to himself. When Evan’s classmate Connor gets a hold of one of the notes and dies by suicide with the note in his pocket, Connor’s parents believe it was a suicide note addressed to Evan. Instead of coming clean, Evan goes along with the misunderstanding, opening up a complicated lie that impacts the lives of both families.
