Fans of Viking thrillers get excited, because Focus Features has set the date for their release of Robert Eggers’ new movie The Northman. Unfortunately, it’s going to be a little bit of a longer wait than some might like to hear. The film from the man behind The Witch and The Lighthouse will hit theaters on April 8, 2022.
The Northman is a revenge movie about a Viking prince seeking justice after the murder of his father. The Witch lead Anya Taylor-Joy and The Lighthouse star Willem Dafoe are both returning for their second films with the director, being joined by Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Ethan Hawke, Claes Bang, and Björk, in her first major acting appearance since her beloved performance in Dancer in the Dark from 2000. The Witch stars Kate Dickie and Ralph Ineson both appear in the film as well.
The film, co-written by the poet/novelist Sjón, is set to be released against Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and an unannounced live-action Disney film. It’s probably safe to say The Northman won’t be competing for the same audience as those films.
