Theaters are finally opening back up in New York City for the first time since last year, and now New York has some other big theatrical news.
The Tribeca Film Festival has announced today that their 2021 festival will not only be happening, but it’ll be happening as a 12-day in-person event, using several outdoor locations to screen films from June 9-20.
This is a huge move for one of the major annual festivals, as Tribeca is working in an unconventional strategy to allow festival goers the ability to still experience the in-person quality of the event while doing their best to adhere to COVID safety guidelines.
A press release for the event promoted this massive endeavor, stating “The 12-day multi-screen outdoor festival will span all boroughs from Battery Park to the Bronx; the East Side to the West Side; downtown to uptown from Brooklyn to Staten Island”
In an accompanying statement, Robert De Niro, co-founder of the festival, said, “The Tribeca Film Festival was born out of our mission to bring people together in the aftermath of 9/11. We’re still doing it. And as New York emerges from the shadow of Covid-19, it seems just right to bring people together again in-person for our 20th anniversary festival.”
Jane Rosenthal, the festival’s co-founder and CEO of Tribeca Enterprises and Tribeca Festival, echoed De Niro’s sentiments, stating, “Tribeca is a community of the most resilient and talented storytellers on the planet. In 20 years, our community of creators and partners have become a family. This summer we are excited to reunite as Tribeca becomes a centerpiece of live entertainment in neighborhoods across New York City.”
In the 20th anniversary of the festival, it’s fitting that they would be the ones to try and assemble this huge undertaking that will incorporate the New York community and landmark locations to bring people back to the movie screens and give them that authentic festival experience while trying to remain as safe as possible as we are still working our way through the pandemic.
