BAFTA Nominations Bring Lots of Snubs and Surprises

*Editor’s Note: Keep in mind the new way that BAFTA voted this year. The entire body voted on their long lists, but it was a smaller committee that decided on these nominations. In that way, it’s closer to the Gotham Awards. So, while these snubs matter, there is an asterisk of sorts at play here, so keep that in mind.*

Apparently when the BAFTAs want to go their own way, they REALLY want to go their own way. In one of the most surprising lists of nominations we’ve perhaps ever seen, the BAFTAs announced their nominees today for this year in film, and they are quite a doozy.

While many thought that not only were Carey Mulligan and Olivia Colman unquestionable locks to be nominated for their performances in Promising Young Woman and The Fatherrespectively, but that both were fairly safe bets to win the whole thing, the two ended up being completely snubbed.

They weren’t alone though, as BAFTA this year showed no interest in being just another awards organization attempting to predict the Oscar nominations. Major contenders who we’ve seen all season were being snubbed left and right, including (but certainly not limited to) Viola DavisGary Oldman, Steven Yeun, and Amanda Seyfried. Despite a Best Film nomination for The Mauritanian and a Leading Actor nomination for Tahar Rahim, Golden Globe winner Jodie Foster also missed the cut.

So, what did get nominated? Well, at the top, some things did manage to stay as expected, as Nomadland topped the nomination tally with 7 overall, including Best Film, Best Director (Chloé Zhao), and Leading Actress (Frances McDormand).

It wasn’t alone with that top nominations tally, however, as the British film Rocks also received 7 nominations, including Best Director (Sarah Gavron), Leading Actress (Bukky Bakray), and Outstanding British Film.

Calm With Horses was another homegrown fave for the Brits, earning itself 4 nominations including two in the acting categories for Niamh Algar and Barry Keoghan. The Danish picture Another Round also earned 4 nominations, including major ones for Mads Mikkelsen in Leading Actor, Thomas Vinterberg in Best Director, and Vinterberg and Tobias Lindholm in Original Screenplay.
