Interview: Bryan Cranston, Danny DeVito, and the VFX Artists Talk ‘The One and Only Ivan’

The One and Only Ivan is one of the more impressive visual feats of 2020. The visual effects that brings Ivan the Gorilla (voiced by Sam Rockwell) to life are just spectacular. The same goes for Bob the dog (voiced by Danny DeVito) and many more. In fact, aside from Bryan Cranston, nearly every character here is amazing CGI work. So, when given the chance to talk to the geniuses who do this VFX magic, I was completely in. Who wouldn’t want to interview such artisans? As a bonus, Cranston and DeVito each paired off with two of the four effects supervisors to make for an even more well-rounded set of conversations.

Below, you can hear me chat with Cranston and DeVito, but also Santiago Colomo Martinez, Nick Davis, Greg Fisher, and Ben Jones, That quartet are part of the braintrust that brings out the spectacular VFX work we so take for granted. We talk about what goes into effects work like this, how complicated it is, but also how artistic it all is. Cranston and DeVito are also on hand to help talk about the performance angle of it all. The former even helped out with the interview, asking some questions along the way. As for the latter, I was actually delighted to make him laugh that signature laugh of his. That was a joy. Look out for that about midway through these interviews!

Here is my chat with Bryan Cranston, Danny DeVito, and the geniuses that make The One and Only Ivan such a visual treat. Enjoy:

The One and Only Ivan is available to watch now on Disney+, so check it out!
