It finally arrived. The moment we’ve all been waiting for! The first images just dropped of David Fincher’s upcoming Netflix drama, Mank.
Mank follows screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz’s tumultuous development of Orson Welles’ iconic masterpiece Citizen Kane (1941).
Since the beginning of 2020, Mank has been considered the frontrunner for Best Picture for the 93rd Academy Awards. So to say that film lovers and Oscar pundits have been anticipating these first looks for a long time now, would be an understatement.
But why are people so excited? The best way I’ve been able to communicate is by comparing it something else. Imagine this:
- Think about your favorite movie of all time…
- Imagine if one of the biggest and most powerful studios on the planet decided to make a film about said movie…
- You then find out that the movie will be directed by a 2 time Academy Award Nominee, David Fincher
- Wait, not just that, your favorite film of all time will star Gary Oldman, who just won an Oscar a few years ago…

Basically, if someone like Greta Gerwig or Steven Spielberg decided to make a film about the creation of Shawshank Redemption, I would be losing my mind. Such is the case, with a film that is widely considered to be one of the single greatest pieces of cinema in history.
Mank is scheduled to release sometime this fall, and I think that this is gonna be the one to beat as of this moment. Assuming things come out, this is shaping up to be a very exciting season!
