Film Review: ‘Bray Wyatt: Becoming Immortal’ is a Heartfelt Tribute to a Unique Talent

Last year, the WWE Universe suffered a devastating loss, with Windham Rotunda unexpectedly passing away. A Superstar who had given everything he had to the business he loved was gone too soon. And at the same time, a family lost somebody who proved to be a loving relative and a mentor. Bray Wyatt: Becoming Immortal explores the legacy of the enigmatic figure in a loving tribute.

The new documentary, which is now available for streaming on Peacock, opens with Rotunda’s family talking about where he came from, and what inspired him to pursue a career in the WWE. Rotunda was a third generation Superstar, and what his family had done in the ring before he was born and while he was growing up was what determined his choice.

Even some of Rotunda’s co-workers, including WWE Superstars Natalya and John Cena, were present in the documentary, paying their respects to the unpredictable and entertaining figure. When everyone who was impacted by Rotunda’s life is seen talking about how the wrestler always cared about the people who loved him feels sincere, beautiful and it reminds viewers how present this loss still is in the locker room.

To understand how Bray Wyatt eventually became a world champion, it was important for audiences to see how the character was created, and how a young athlete tried different ways of becoming someone relevant within the industry he had dedicated his life to. Husky Harris became Bray Wyatt, and the WWE Universe wasn’t ready for what was about to happen.

But between all the anecdotes about how Windham Rotunda created his television characters, Becoming Immortal presents an honest reflection of how the Supertar’s spiriti showed courage outside of the ring, too. This feature explains how Wyatt’s achievements in the ring were nothing compared to the brilliance Rotunda delivered in his personal life.

Regardless of what wrestling fans could’ve thought of him as a performer, no one can deny that Rotunda was very creative with the characters he portrayed and the ideas he brought to the table. From the Bray Wyatt that was a cult leader, to The Fiend, who haunted a wide variety of Superstars, it’s easy for everyone to see why Rotunda ended up being such an acclaimed performer in WWE.

With plenty of new footage and interviews, Bray Wyatt: Becoming Immortal is a beautiful tool for audience members to process the loss of one of the best talents the WWE has seen in recent years. The business that saw Windham Rotunda become a global star is a thing of beauty because real life can co-exist with what is seen on television. And that is exactly what happened with the life of Bray Wyatt, a man ready to give his heart and soul to every person who he came across.
