It’s been one hell of a summer for the cinemas, and as the season is winding down, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is continuing to add to its record-setting $2 billion by once again being the number one movie of the weekend for almost a month. The film made $39 million this weekend at the domestic box office, while Sony’s other film, Insidious: Out of the Further, came in second with $25.3 million.
As for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, the movie has now become the highest-grossing IMAX release of all time and has fully propelled 70mm’s comeback. The exact same theatres in North America that showed Nolan’s latest film are also going to screen Dune: Part Three on IMAX 70mm, which has crashed all the major ticketing websites due to the massive, almost overwhelming demand for the movie. It’s a great time to be a movie theater owner after many years of uncertainty.
As for smaller movies, Matt Johnson‘s Tony and Jane Schoenbrun‘s Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma are doing great business as they expand into more markets, with $5.0 million and $1.9 million tallies, respectively. Given that these are independent productions, their marketing budgets were much smaller than those of blockbuster fare, and the buzz both films are receiving seems to translate into genuine ticket sales, and they will likely leg out as their expansions continue in the following weeks.
Regarding Jean-François Richet‘s Mutiny, an August release doesn’t seem like the prime spot for such a Jason Statham vehicle that performs much better in January. The film pretty much opened with a massive whimper at the box office, earning $7.5 million in its opening domestic weekend, which is a little better than Black Bear’s Spa Weekend that opened with $3.0 million in ninth place. Not a great start for the burgeoning distributor.
As the summer movie season closes next weekend, one can safely say it was a massive success for both moviegoers and cinema owners. The momentum is likely to continue later this year, with plenty of blockbusters and independent fare for audiences to enjoy. Which film are you the most looking forward to discovering in the fall?
