Interview: Laurie Metcalf Talks Her ‘Monster: The Ed Gein Story’ and ‘Big Mistakes’ Performances

Laurie Metcalf can be seen giving outstanding back-to-back performances in Monster: The Ed Gein Story and Big Mistakes. The third season of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s anthology series premiered in October of 2025 with the actress portraying Augusta Gein.

Ed Gein’s legacy inspired Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Silence of the Lambs, and more. “I was always really intrigued by the pitch that I heard from Ryan Murphy, because there was no script. He explained all about Ed Gein, his backstory, the mother, and where he grew up. But I didn’t know, I mean, horror fans do, that all these progressively gorier movies that had started to come out, starting with Psycho, all were traced back to him,” she shared. “That, to me, was such an interesting take on the whole series, started by Ed Gein and book-ended by him.”

“That, to me, was the selling point, and I thought a clever, clever way to tell the story of this one man, but then how audiences took, once they had a taste of what his story was about, that just exponentially kept getting bigger and bigger, and they were demanding more and more gore, more and more to be fed, more of this diet. I just thought that was really, really clever of Ryan.”

Meanwhile, Dan Levy’s Big Mistakes allowed her to jump into a comedic crime thriller, which follows two siblings who are pulled into the world of organized crime after stealing a necklace. The series has already been renewed for a second season.

“The new takeaway for me for Big Mistakes is the way that Dan is shooting it. You’ve got the cameras sort of in motion, usually two going at the same time, because I’m thinking of the basic sitcom that I used to do, which was four single cameras stationary. So he’s got camera people moving around, and then we also have the luxury of being able to speak over each other, overlap, and it makes it sound way more spontaneous to begin with. I really do consider that a luxury, rather than keeping it very rigid and rapid-fire back and forth,” Metcalf, who portrays Linda, expressed. “I just like the style of it. I knew that the scripts were going to be great and that he was going to be great to work opposite off of, as is the rest of the cast, but I’m so happy that he’s chosen that style.”
