Neon’s Hokum sees Adam Scott portraying novelist Ohm Bauman, who goes to scatter his parents’ ashes at a remote inn. While there, he is consumed by tales of a witch haunting the honeymoon suite and disturbing visions, which eventually lead him to confront the dark corners of his past after a strange disappearance.
Damian McCarthy, who wrote and directed the film, opened up about seeing Scott’s take on the character of Ohm: “I was just curious how Adam was going to perform the horror, like how do you perform being scared? It sounds like it could be an easy thing of just giving a little jump or being startled, but we were going to have such a long sequence where it was just going to be Adam in this dark room for a couple of weeks, and it’s just this progression of scares where we needed somewhere to go where it was going to get worse and worse.”
He continued to explain, “He was going to become more terrified and more desperate and frantic to escape. I wasn’t nervous about it at all. I mean, [I’ve been] such a fan of Adam’s for a long time. I knew that it was all going to go great, but when I started to really look forward to it was when we shot this one little scene right in the first few days, where a bell just startles Adam, and just the way he did it felt perfect. I kind of had a little bit of a nervous laughter behind the camera, going, I can’t wait to get into those three weeks of just watching Adam going through this night of hell.”
Scott then revealed what he considers to be the most underrated element of the horror genre, sharing, “Maybe character, because I think that effective horror movies, they’re effective because of the characters that are moving through them, and I think it’s easy to forget that that’s what we’re connecting to as an audience. From Laurie Strode on up, we’re following, we’re caring about, and being scared by these elements because of the characters.”
