Timothée Chalamet has established himself, in a relatively short period of time, as one of the premiere young actors in Hollywood. Hell, he can make the case to be among the best actors working today, just in general. This year, he’s really established himself as a force, becoming a potential Oscar frontrunner in Best Actor for Marty Supreme. With the film in limited release before opening wide on Christmas, a ranking of his best performances so far seems to be well in order today.
In my review of Marty Supreme (here), I raved about Chalamet like so:
Timothée Chalamet turns in career best work with a performance that may well prove to be his Oscar winning role. Chalamet just owns the screen here, essaying a character who you love and hate in equal measure. His depiction of youthful arrogance has you unable to look away, even when Marty is doing things you really wish he wouldn’t. The tightrope he walks is just stunning, from start to finish, especially as he’s in nearly every scene.
Previously, I said something similar about him (here) when praising A Complete Unknown:
Timothée Chalamet leads an impeccable cast while doing the best work of his career so far. He becomes Bob Dylan in a way that’s never impression, but simply masterful interpretation. There isn’t a moment where you see Chalamet or compare him to Dylan. He just is Dylan here.
Below, you can see how Chalamet stacks up for me. As you might imagine from the above quotes, Marty Supreme is in the pole position, followed by A Complete Unknown. Then, it’s a matter of taste, though Call Me By Your Name has a strong claim to make on the number three spot. One thing that you can clearly see from my list is that the young man chooses interesting movies that speak to his creative spirit in one form or another. Whether he wins an Academy Award this season or not, his time as an Oscar winner is coming, mark my words.
Here now is my ranking of the best of Timothée Chalamet so far. Behold:
10. A Rainy Day in New York
9. Dune
8. The King
6. Little Women
5. Beautiful Boy
4. Lady Bird
3. Call Me By Your Name
