Interview: Discussing ‘Billy Joel: And So It Goes’ with Muse Elizabeth Weber

When you watch Billy Joel: And So It Goes, you certainly gain a new understanding of the meaning behind many of Billy Joel‘s songs. That was not a surprise, of course. The surprise? How much of an appreciation you develop for the people in his life, especially his first wife, Elizabeth Weber. Very much his muse, as well as one of his early managers, she’s seminal in the development of the Piano Man. Plus, a whole bunch of his tunes do happen to be about her. So, when the opportunity to chat with her came up, I was more than happy to. Today, that discussion comes your way.

In my review of the documentary (here), I explain how important the music and musician was to my childhood, which set me up to be particularly an interested viewer:

Billy Joel is seminal to my life. I can say with a decent amount of certainty that his music was the first rock and roll that I heard as a newborn. As I’ve written about previously, my mother was a huge fan of his. My dad loves him too. So, his songs were ubiquitous in my childhood. The documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes manages to lean in to those who have those experiences, while also being a perfect entrance point to anyone who’s never paid attention to Joel.

Below, you can hear my conversation with Weber. She’s obviously lived a full life beyond what’s depicted in the film, which she gets into, but it’s certainly fascinating to hear about that time period. Weber talks about saying yes to doing the movie, the experience of having made it, and some very interesting tidbits from her days living and working alongside Joel. She’s quite an accomplished woman, so it was a pleasure to listen to her. If you haven’t seen the documentary yet, Billy Joel: And So It Goes is wonderful, so check it out ASAP…
