Interview: ‘Elio’ Directors Domee Shi and Madeline Sharafian Alongside Producer Mary Alice Drumm Discuss the Pixar Way

Making any animated film is a real intense experience. Making one at Pixar seems like it’s just as hard, though somehow more pleasurable. For Elio directors Domee Shi and Madeline Sharafian, as well as producer Mary Alice Drumm, it felt that way in spades. I spoke to Brad Garrett yesterday (here) about the movie (and previously spoke to Shi here about Turning Red). Today, it’s Shi, Sharafian, and Drumm up to bat.

In my review of Elio (here), I said the following about their filmmaking:

Directors Madeline SharafianDomee Shi, and Adrian Molina make Elio a visual treat. The screenplay by Julia ChoMark Hammer, and Mike Jones (Story By credits go to Cho, Molina, Sharafian, and Shi) doesn’t try to do too much. Instead, they lean in to the fun of being a kid in space, amongst all sorts of aliens. Visually, it’s sumptuous and a treat. On a plot level, it’s simple, though the feelings of grief, loneliness, and wondering what else is out there are palpable. Plus, the use of Sagan is simple yet profoundly effective.

Below, you can see my conversation with Shi, Sharafian, and Drumm. Our brief time together was spent talking about the Pixar way. Having gone to Pixar’s campus a few times, I’ve heard a lot about that, as well as experienced some of it, so hearing them get into it was very interesting. You can tell they’re not only thrilled to be done with the film, but also very proud of the work. Once you see the movie, you’ll likely agree, too. Elio is out now and is a lovely work, befitting the Pixar brand.

Here now is my interview with Elio filmmakers Domee Shi, Madeline Sharafian, and Mary Alice Drumm. Enjoy:

Elio is in theaters now!
