We’re a month away from the 2025 Cannes Film Festival holding its press conference to announce the movies playing this year. With Anora having gone all the way from the Palme d’Or at Cannes to dominating the Academy Awards, extra eyes will be on the festival. Will someone else this year have the same potential at Oscar dominance? We’ll see, though some of the titles that will and won’t be at the fest in 2025 are starting to come into focus.
According to Variety, we should bank on some films being at Cannes so far for sure. They inclued Jim Jarmusch’s Father Mother Sister Brother, Spike Lee‘s Highest 2 Lowest, and Richard Linklater‘s Nouvelle Vague. The piece also mentions Wes Anderson‘s The Phoenician Scheme, Greg Araki‘s I Want Your Sex, Ari Aster‘s Eddington, Kelly Reichardt‘s The Mastermind, Kristen Stewart‘s The Chronology of Water, and Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value. On the other hand, the trade reports that audiences should not bank on seeing Paul Thomas Anderson‘s still to be titled movie, Luc Besson‘s Dracula, Paul Greengrass‘ The Lost Bus, Yorgos Lanthimos‘ Bugonia, Nicolas Winding Refn’s The Avenging Silence, Benny Safdie‘s The Smashing Machine, Julian Schnabel‘s In the Hands of Dante, and Celine Song‘s Materialists at Cannes. If nothing else, this is a good starter for what the festival could have.
