What Makes ‘Squid Game’ So Addictive?

When Squid Game first aired on Netflix back in 2022, it quickly became a worldwide sensation. It tells the story of Hwang In-ho (player 001). In the first season, he organizes a series of life-or-death games, pitching impoverished people against each other to win huge money.

Since the first season ended, people have been hoping and waiting for its return. The wait’s over, but how does did Season 2 compare to the first one? While reviews on Rotten Tomatoes was not overly impressed by season two, only dishing out a 3.4 out of 5-star rating overall, we believe it lived up to expectations, and as you read on, we are sure you’ll agree and will be keen to tune in and watch the drama unfold.

By the way, at the time of writing this review, MSN is reporting that “Squid Game Season 2 is No. 1 on Netflix for the 4th consecutive week.”

Squid Game Season 2’s World is Expanded

The first two episodes expand the world of Squid Game. The first season was mostly centered around the complex where the action took place. S2 begins by taking you on a journey in search of the deadly island and then explores things like the Recruiter and his motivation, and explores the background of the soldiers – the guys and gals in the red suits with the forbidding masks.

The Games in Season 2 are Still Great

It wouldn’t be the same without Seong Gi-hun, player 456, who ran out the game-winner in Season 1. Of course, if the same contests were rolled over to S2, it would’ve given our hero (played by Lee Jung-jae) the advantage – something no player is allowed.

You’ll be pleased to hear that Red Light, Green Light reappears in episode three. Having played it before, player 456 tries to warn the other contestants of the danger if caught moving during the Red Light phase. It looks like all the players will survive, but in true Squid Game fashion, they won’t. You can watch the episode trailer on YouTube below.

The Unexpected Twists in the New Season Add Fun by the Boatload

S2 is full of unexpected twists (one of the best revolves around Kang No-eul. She’s a defector from  North Korea who is forced to leave her daughter behind. Upon introduction, you’re led to believe she’s a new player – number 011. So, it comes as a big surprise when we finally realise she’s really one of the Triangles.

What makes the Korean hit so addictive?

The thing that makes this one of Netflix’s most successful series is that it relates to current social instability themes, people’s general insecurity, and inequality, and it weaves them all together into compelling and terrifying TV.

What you need to know

The games and characters are like metaphors of Korea’s past. They blend the nostalgia of childhood with the country’s tough economic realities. Squid Game takes traditional kid’s games and gives then a cynical, dark twist. As the series progresses, it peels back the layers of human nature, revealing some rather uncomfortable truths regarding our instinct to survive, group dynamics, and morality.

There are far too many actors in the complete role-call to list. Here are the main ones:

  • Lee Jung-jae – Hi-hun – 456
  • Lee Byung-hun – The Front Man

Creating the World of Squid Game on Netflix

The idea first came to the mind of Hwang Dong-hyuk back in 2008, at a time when he was totally into comics. He finished what he describes as a comic book story in 2009. But it wasn’t until 10 years later that he got the opportunity to get back to it when Netflix picked it up and agreed to give him free rein as the director.

Season 3 is Just Around the Corner

The series finale ends in more of a cliffhanger than S1 did. It begins with a special game following the bathroom brawl. The end sees Oh Young returning to his duties as the “Front Man”. He hits back at Gi-hun by killing Jung-bae. Having seemingly lost everything and having failed to stop the game, Gi-hun is in utter despair.

Will he continue to try and put an end to the contest, or will his character morph into something else altogether? Series 2 and 3 were shot together, so hopefully, we won’t have to wait too long to finally get to know.

In the meantime, if you can’t wait for your next Squid Game fix, why not try one of the series-based games that are out there? Or, if you enjoy the thrill of risk and strategy, there are online slots like Squid Game: One Lucky Day. You can read reviews of that game over at Sotsjudge. If you’re a fan of engaging and dynamic slots, you might also enjoy checking out some of the best Habanero slots, known for their immersive gameplay and high-quality graphics. This way, you can experience the fun of the series without having to put your life on the line—just try the demo game for free!

Closing Thoughts

Critics and reviewers seldom all agree, and so it is with this recent Netflix release. At the same time, Vogue welcomed it, saying, “It’s a twisty, blood-soaked riot—and one of the best shows of 2024“, while People.com said,It’s still brutal, but less bold.”

Viewer’s comments on Reddit were pretty mixed, too, with things like, “There are way too many voting parts in Season 2” from Sudden_Analysis_6755 22 and, “Nobody could have imagined it would then go on to become Netflix’s most successful show,” from Teddy 547. Either way, they’re watching, right?
