Interview: ‘Juror #2’ Screenwriter Jonathan Abrams Chats About Making the Latest Clint Eastwood Film

Legal thrillers used to hit theaters all the time. They were popular and successful, sure, but they also largely were high quality. The fact that these films have more or less disappeared is part of what makes Juror #2 such a breath of fresh air. The other fact is that the movie is some of director Clint Eastwood‘s best work in years. What he saw in writer Jonathan Abrams‘ screenplay translates into a real good time, despite Warner Bros. doing their best to keep you from seeing it. Recently, Abrams hopped on Zoom to talk about Eastwood and more, including his attempt to make a biopic about the 1986 New York Mets. As the flick comes to Max, our discussion comes your way.

In my review of the film (here), I had the following to say about Abrams’ work with Eastwood:

Director Clint Eastwood seems invigorated here, working off a script by Jonathan A. Abrams. Now, there are some shots that do appear to be first takes, and the third act is very flawed, but so much of this is just adult cinema fun. Abrams layers on a few more twists than we need, with the conclusion feeling rushed, but there creeping skepticism about the legal system does feel like something Eastwood is feeding off of.

Below, you can hear my conversation with Abrams. Not only do we talk about Eastwood and the film, he does provide the aforementioned tidbit on the Mets movie he would love to make. Hearing his process in such a frank manner is refreshing, which does help to show why the flick is as good as it is. This is just a really enjoyable back and forth, which hopefully you all feel as well. Juror #2 hits Max tomorrow, so if you missed it in theaters, definitely stream it this weekend!
