Robert Downey Jr. to Return in the MCU as Doctor Doom in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

While many fans were wondering what would come of Avengers 5 in the wake of the firing of Jonathan Majors from the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Kang the Conqueror, Marvel Studios has announced, at San Diego Comic-Con, that the upcoming Avengers movie is now titled Avengers: Doomsday.

That’s right, the big bad of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga is no longer Kang, but Doctor Doom, and he will be played by none other than Robert Downey Jr. Whether he will be a variant of Tony Stark, or Victor Von Doom himself, remains to be seen. However, the casting news was met with widespread backlash from both fans and critics, with many criticizing Marvel for acting desperate as the franchise has gone through some challenges over the past year.

Anthony Russo and Joe Russo are also officially confirmed to direct both this installment, and Avengers: Secret Wars, which will release in cinemas the following year. Stephen McFeely is also on board to write the screenplay for both installments, which will respectively bow out in May 2026 and 2027.
