The Venice Film Festival is coming. While the full lineup for the 81st edition of the festival won’t be announced until July 23rd, this week brought some news. Venice has an honorary award to bestow on a very famous actress. The actress in question? None other than Sigourney Weaver.
According to Variety and other sources, Weaver (interviewed here by Joey a few years back) is tapped for an honorary Golden Lion in September. In a statement, she said: “To be gifted this award is a privilege I share with all the filmmakers and collaborators I have worked with throughout the years. I proudly accept this award in celebration of all who have helped bring these films to life.” Venice’s director Alberto Barbera said, in part: “An actress of the caliber of Sigourney Weaver has few rivals. Strengthened by her significant theatrical training, she won over the great film-going public with ‘Alien,’ directed by Ridley Scott, soon becoming an emblematic figure of the 1980s.”
