What hasn’t Ron Howard done in his career? After a first act that included more than one iconic television show in front of the camera, he stepped behind the camera to become an A-list director. Whether it’s the early days with Night Shift (referenced early on in our conversation) or Splash, his big Academy Award players like A Beautiful Mind, or really anything he does, his films are events. This also includes when he makes a documentary, which is the case with Jim Henson Idea Man, about…you guessed it…the legend that is Jim Henson. Recently, coming off of its Cannes Film Festival premiere, Howard joined me on Zoom to chat about the movie. Today, that back and forth comes your way.
In my review of Jim Henson Idea Man (here), I had the following to say about Howard’s documentary filmmaking:
Below, you can hear my discussion with Howard. We talk about Henson, as well as how documentaries differ from narrative features. Howard lets us in to his process, how he even test screened Jim Henson Idea Man, and more. He’s a very interesting filmmaker to listen to, as the man is a true storyteller. He has an Oscar on his mantle, after all, so he clearly knows what he’s doing. Once you see this doc, which is streaming on Disney+ now, you’ll not just appreciate Henson more, you’ll do the same for Howard as well.
Here now is my interview with Jim Henson Idea Man director Ron Howard. Enjoy:
Jim Henson Idea Man is streaming on Disney+ right now!
