Interview: John Magaro Talks ‘LaRoy, Texas’ Alongside Acting Choices and More!

Whenever I see John Magaro pop up in a film, I know I’m in store for an interesting performance. Last year saw a lot of people start to really notice him with Past Lives, but I’ve enjoyed his work for years now, going all the way back to Liberal Arts over a decade ago. With LaRoy, Texas, Magaro gets a chance to play a lead, in a Coen Brothers homage, no less. So, it was a no brainer to want to talk with him again, after having done so a few times over his career. Today, that conversation comes your way.

In my review of LaRoy, Texas (here), I had this to say about Magaro:

John Magaro leads a very well cast film by showcasing a man at wits end. Magaro rarely gets to play a part like this, so he embraces every aspect of it. I always enjoy seeing him in anything, but given a lead role and a chance to shine, Magaro makes the most of it.

Below, you can see my chat with Magaro. We’re focusing a lot on LaRoy, Texas, to be sure, but there’s a lot of back and forth about career choices in general. He’s been in films of all sizes, so he knows what different sets are like, so it’s fascinating to hear about a smaller production like this one. The movie is a great showcase for him and it’s almost assuredly exciting times to come for Magaro, with I for one very keen to see what’s around the bend…
